FM’s 15: Summer Art Market

Come and support those who do creative things within our diverse community! This time we will be focusing on the Do It Yourselfers and will have a 100% local flea market! Weather permitting we hope to set up all the tables outside in the courtyard for optimized viewing of all the locally hand made items:) If the weather is uncooperative all tables will fit snugly inside the walls of the Red Raven…There will also be on-stage performances featuring local music, new and established, as well as poetry and short stories.

Remember that there is no limit to what a person can present. The motto is if you have devoted time and energy into something chances are its worth receiving applause for. Being that this event is run and fueled by volunteers we are constantly in need of people willing to perform/present on and off stage. 100% of profit made by sellers goes directly back to them and helps them continue to do what they love.

If you plan on sharing material, a few songs, displaying your craft, or simply would like to get involved shoot us a message or post on our wall to let us know what you plan on doing. We ask this because we want to be able to provide the supports needed to make this a successful experience for everyone involved. Let’s celebrate what this beautifully creative community has to offer!

She has received Honorable Mention in Berklee’s Prestigious Performer/Songwriter Contest and performed in The Best of Berklee’s Songwriters Showcase.  Her song “Let’s Be Frisbees” was recently featured on a compilation CD for the Raising the Blues Foundation, which distributed uplifting music to children’s hospitals around New England.

Rosemary Sauvageau – “My mom is a lover of music. She had a piano she bought from one of her former piano teachers just so she could play a few simple tunes for her own leisure. She always hoped and prayed she would have a child that would use this instrument because she loved listening to piano music. Piano was always my first love. I could play piano by ear when I was 2 and started taking organized lessons when I was 5. Ever since then piano has been a large part of my life.”

Highmay with local The Prairie

HighMay is the latest brainchild of singer-songwriter, Jimmy Atto. He has been touring and writing songs since 2002, when he released his first full-length album, Time Is Right. Now, with 2 LPs under his belt, and a 3rd full-length album looming in 2010, Jimmy is releasing the record as “HighMay” (a simple play on words with his birth name, and with a little Spanish influence).

This project also includes all new material, and some of his solo songs, and a new cast of musicians in the studio, and on the road.

The Prairie is a solo project that he started months ago. He is trying to experiment with his voice and instruments that are sort of foreign to him … mandolin, accordion, etc. Dance beats, slow acoustic jams, instrumentals, you just never know what he will produce next. Give a listen with an open mind and you just might enjoy yourself.

Stone Soup – Storytime Harvest Edition

Let’s celebrate the harvest season with a special Red Raven Storytime.

Storytime begins at 11 am and the meal is at 12 pm (or thereabouts). Please bring a favorite homegrown vegetable (but store bought is fine too) to help us make STONE SOUP.

“Stone Soup is an old folk story in which hungry strangers persuade local people of a town to give them food. It is usually told as a lesson in cooperation, especially amid scarcity. In varying traditions, the stone has been replaced with other common inedible objects, and therefore the fable is also known as button soup, wood soup, nail soup, and axe soup. In the Aarne-Thompson folktale classification system it is type 1548.”

This event is being put on by ““

Makers Market

There is so much talent in the Fargo/Moorhead area but no easily accessible venues to display your work. Especially when it comes to free all ages events the Fargo/Moorhead area needs some work, and were here to help! We have come to the realization that in order for people to grow and be self sufficient through a craft (whether it be music, crocheting, writing, painting, film, sewing, acting, jewelry, comedy, etc…) they first need feedback and support to help them reach their potential and continue to pursue what makes them happy.

We strive to offer a non-judgemental inclusive space that operates solely on volunteers from our diverse community to enable this event to operate. This space is a welcomed invitation to all forms of art and where those who participate are encouraged to broaden their horizons and challenge themselves to grow. Since the commonality for everyone involved is creating something out of nothing just imagine the possibilities for collaboration! Fostered under the wings of The Red Raven, with its wonderful atmosphere and quality Java, this event has now been placed in the hands of the community.

Here at The Makers Market we want you to be involved and become part of the team that helps make the event what it is today. We have the opportunity to make a difference in our own community while having fun and getting to know other fellow artists! Help create the community you want to live in, and be the change you want to see. Let us know if interested in getting involved :)

Brandon Jordahl, Jesus of Genome & Riesage

There’s nothing better then enjoying a chilly Friday evening at the RREP. Especially when there is a show of this magnitude!

Jesus or Genome is a rare treat to have play on this night too! Mike Cundork is on tour with his bros in LOOM, and luckily for us they have a day off from tour. He’ll be coming through with his acoustic in hand and playing his folk music to give you insight to the collective conscious and beyond!

Riesage will be bringing our usual selves to the Raven with Gothic western and drunken stupors.

Brandon Jordahl with his deep solemn voice and pop sensibility he’ll surely make your day!

This show is going to have a $5 cover. We need to help these cool cats get to where they’re going! Come out! Bring friends! THE MORE THE MERRIER!
Tasty drinks are always available for patrons attending/not attending the show.

Landscape Interventions on the Red River Basin

A reception and chance to converse with the designers will be held on Monday November 21st from noon to 5pm.

See a contour model of the entire Red River Basin from Lake Traverse, SD to Lake Winnipeg.

Landscape Interventions in the Red River Basin is an exhibition that addresses social and ecological issues in ecosystems prone to frequent flooding and drought. Organized by the 5th Year Landscape Architecture studio at North Dakota State University, the exhibit will interest all Fargoans including architects, landscapes, architects, engineers, and ecologists. The Red River Basin, the land that drains into the mighty Red River, extends from Lake Traverse in SD to Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba. It contains over 28 million acres of land, much of it formed by glacial Lake Agassiz, which ultimately contributes to issues of flooding and drought. The exhibit is a showcase of 30 large-scale projects that address these issues. Each project has inventoried a separate 1 million acres, from the Turtle Mountains in the west past Detroit Lakes in the east, to determine the most urgent programs that could be implemented basin-wide. Design proposals include basin-wide flood flow reduction strategies, alternatives to flood diversions, constructed wetlands, settlement basins, habitat restoration, cultural and educational facilities, eco-tourism and recreational facilities, and eco-system services as solutions. A scaled contour model of the entire basin will help visitors to frame the context of the smallness of our cities in comparison to the Red River Basin. The exhibition will be displayed at the Stationhouse Gallery in the Red Raven Espresso Parlor, , from Monday November 21st through December 2nd. A reception and chance to converse with the designers will be held on Monday November 21st from noon to 5pm.

Dr. Sketchy’s featuring Dizzy Dame!

Dust off those drawing pads and grab a cup of Joe for this all ages drawing session!

Dizzy Dame has a bit of Vaudevillian in her blood. Two women in her family were dancers in the golden age; one danced on Broadway as a rockette in the 30s and 40s, the other toured the famous vaudeville circuit and sang in night clubs in NYC– she was even proposed to over Ginger Rogers. Perhaps she gets her passion from that side of the family!
Dizzy Dame will bring a bit of the old Hollywood glam-o-rama the December drawing session!

Copyright status – wikipedia

Night of the Living Dead entered the because the original theatrical distributor, the Walter Reade Organization, neglected to place a indication on the prints. In 1968, required a proper notice for a work to maintain a copyright. Image Ten displayed such a notice on the title frames of the film beneath the original title, Night of the Flesh Eaters. The distributor removed the statement when it changed the title.

A limited number of theatrical release prints were distributed by Walter Reade and these copies could have been shelved if Romero and Image Ten had elected. This would have given Romero the opportunity to rename the film, do a few brief “creative” edits, and then obtain a new Copyright. But this was never done and the theatrical releases continued to be distributed until eventually reprinted and distributed by home video distributors.

Because of the public domain status, the film is sold on home video by many distributors. As of 2006, the lists 23 copies of Night of the Living Dead retailing on and nineteen on . The original film is available to view or download free on Internet sites such as , and . As of October 31, 2010, it is the Internet Archive’s second most downloaded film, with 708,608 downloads.

FM Derby Girls Recruit Night

The Fargo Moorhead Derby Girls, LLC (hereafter referred to a FM Derby Girls or FMDG) are the state of North Dakota’s first and premier not-for-profit womens flat-track roller derby league. FMDG is a skater-owned and operated league that operates under the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) motto hailed throughout the country of “By the Skaters, For the Skaters”, and “Real. Strong. Athletic. Revolutionary.” FMDG is on a mission to bring roller derby to North Dakota and foster serious competition on a national level by hosting bouts and traveling to compete against other roller derby leagues across the country and in our area (Minnesota, South Dakota, Canada, and more).

Additionally, FMDG is dedicated to the evolving culture and sport of the American pastime of modern roller derby. FMDG challenges social stereotypes and strives to provide positive role models for young and old alike. Through the league’s bouts, events, and other outreach, FMDG brings athleticism and creativity to what NBC Nightly News calls, “The fastest growing sport in America.”

The women of FMDG are also interested in contributing to the local community of Fargo/Moorhead by donating profits, goods, and volunteer time to local community efforts and organizations. FMDG is unique from other sports teams and businesses because the skaters themselves from the Fargo/Moorhead and surrounding areas manage it. Our league is separated into various committees that include treasury, marketing, sponsorship, training, and more. Each of the women on our league is drawn to this sport due to their love of the ever-growing international sport of roller derby. However, in order to maintain the motto of “By the Skaters, For the Skaters” each skater on the league is expected to contribute or participate in the business end of the league as well. The women of FMDG learn how to create and maintain professional partnerships with local businesses, file taxes, and everything else that is required to run a successful business in the state of North Dakota. The skaters handle all aspects of bout production, and contrary to popular belief, there is nothing staged or scripted in the sport of flat track roller derby, unlike the banked-track sport we knew as roller derby of our yesteryears. Our organization provides a healthy athletic outlet for the women involved, an opportunity to bring our community together, and also insight and valuable business training to the women involved. The result is a refreshingly honest and genuine entertainment experience for all who attend.

Chase Burkhart, Emily Black, & The Midwest Coast

The Red Raven Espresso Parlor Presents…

CHASE BURKHART,

EMILY BLACK,

& introducing…

THE MIDWEST COAST!

Friday, February 24th. 7:30pm @ Red Raven Espresso Parlor…$3 cover

Local singer/songwriter CHASE BURKHART brings a unique voice to the Fargo/Moorhead music scene. Wielding the acoustic guitar to complement a set of tenor pipes, Burkhart draws from a vast array of creative influences to inspire his musical expressions. His affection for early nineties hip hop is evident in songs that feature hyper-percussive lyrics, steady rhyme scheme, and smooth, R&B-style vocals. Songs featuring a more relaxed, less acrobatic vocal delivery, decreased lyrical emphasis on rhymes and rhythmic precision, and a greater sense of overall character are more akin to folkys such as Feist and Sondre Lerche. Burkhart releases his inner-Rivers Cuomo with harsher, hyper-expressive vocals and heavier chord changes on certain indie-rock inspired tunes, while others seem crafted specifically for collaborative jam sessions…evoking past festival experiences.

EMILY BLACK’s obsession with writing music began at a young age, and despite numerous attempts by well-meaning realists, she continues to pursue that passion in the hopes of one day turning it into a career. Heavily influenced by Regina Spektor and Beethoven, she tends to have a rather eclectic repertoire of originals. She’s released three CDs and another two are in the works. You can find her on Facebook, contact her at emily.black.music@hotmail.com, or check her out on iTunes. She was raised in Williston, ND with her five brothers and sisters who all play instruments as well and are kind enough humor her by playing with her at gigs, helping her record, or listening to her play the same song over and over and over… She is a sophomore at NDSU majoring in Piano Performance, even though she has no idea why. She’s also studying Composition in her free time, which makes a little more sense.

A new indie-rock band, THE MIDWEST COAST is made up of musicians from the Fargo area. Members of the defunct band “Davy Jones & The Seven Seas” Michael Bartunek (tenor sax) , Nick Gangl (drums), and John Schreier (guitar & vox) combine with other local talents Eric Itzin (trumpet) and Mitchell Rittenbach (bass) to make a fresh new face for the Fargo-Moorhead music scene.

Documentary Faith Night

Here’s the idea: let’s hang out, watch a movie, and talk about it. Simple and sweet, huh? Let’s make it happen.

WHO: the event is sponsored by The Project F-M and totally anyone vaguely interested in spirituality, culture, and faith should come.

WHAT: we’ll be showing the documentary, “Lord, Save us From Your Followers.” (http://www.lordsaveusthemovie.com/home.html) It’s a hilarious, deep, thought-provoking, fun film. Award-winning too!

WHEN: Thursday, April 5, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 or so.

HOW: we’ll meet in the Community Room of Red Raven Espresso Parlor. Red Raven is across from McDonald’s on Main street. There’s parking in the back or on the street. The community room is the one labeled “community room” with a screen and projector in it. ;)

WHY: because we’re cool like that, films are great, and Red Raven is rad.

Questions? contact Adam Copeland, 701-317-0567.

Insurgent Theatre: In The Belly

In the Belly depicts solitary confinement as a way to start a larger conversation about the U.S. prison system. It is minimal, experimental, and versatile – the show runs about 45 minutes, with a discussion hosted in the Community Room after the play.

In the belly is where things digest, where they are broken down so their value can be extracted. This is where things are made to rot. If our society is a beast, its belly is the prison system. This work from Insurgent Theatre seeks to manifest imprisonment on stage, overlays it with critical analysis of the system, and follows up with in-depth discussion about abolishing prison in America.

This show contains nudity, violence and other sad realities of the US prison system.
